The Process from Call to Ordination

Welcome to the Oregon Pacific District Board of Ministry pages. On these pages you should be able to find information to help you navigate the processes leading from a call to ministry, through local and district licensing and educational preparation, and on to ordination as an Elder or Deacon in the Church of the Nazarene.


If you are a pastor looking for guidance for someone in your church who has signaled that they have been called to ministry, please direct them to this site and please read pastordoc. When ready to do so you can download a Local Minister's License Packet here .

If you are someone who has sensed a call to ministry and need to know where to start, you've come to the right place. Please follow these steps.

1. Make an appointment to speak with your pastor regarding your call to ministry.

2. Download a copy of the Handbook for Christian Ministries .

3. Read (at least) all of Stage One in the Handbook and the listed Church of the Nazarene Manual paragraphs; Work through Stage One with your pastor.

4. When recommended to do so by your pastor, please register your call to ministry with District Secretary Bud Pugh and the Ministerial Studies Secretary by submitting the form to Register a Call to Ministry .

5. If your pastor and Church Board determine it is appropriate they will offer you an application for a Local Minister's License, ask you to fill it in, and will consider you for a Local Minister's License.

6. Investigate educational opportunities to prepare for ministry by visiting siteslisted here .

7. Plan to meet with the District Board of Ministry or its sub-committee when requested to do so (annually, typically scheduled in March).
